Saptha Vidanga Sthalangal

Saptha Vidanga Sthalangal refers to seven sacred temples where Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of Thyagaraja Swamy, each with a unique form of dance movement (vidanga) associated with it. These temples are mostly located in the Cauvery delta region of Tamil Nadu and are connected to a fascinating legend that intertwines devotion, divine grace, and dance.

The story goes that Indra, the king of the celestial beings, worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Thyagaraja. A Chola king named Musukuntha was blessed by Indra and requested the image of Thyagaraja Swamy for worship on Earth. Indra, hesitant to give away the sacred idol, created six duplicate images. But the king, with devotion and divine insight, identified the original idol. As a reward for his faith, Indra gifted him the original idol along with the six replicas.

Each of these seven images was enshrined in a separate temple, and these seven temples are :

  1. Tiruvarur (Original)
  2. Thirunallaru
  3. Nagapattinam
  4. Tirukarayil
  5. Tirukolili
  6. Thiruvaaimur
  7. Tirumaraikadu
