Temple Significance

The sages of Tharukavanam, blinded by pride in their spiritual austerities, failed to recognize the supremacy of God Shiva and even sought to destroy Him. As part of a powerful sacrificial ritual, they invoked a fierce tiger and unleashed it against Him. Shiva effortlessly subdued the beast, flayed its skin, and wore it around His waist as a symbol of His victory over arrogance and ignorance. Tiru-Palathurai is revered as the sacred place where this divine manifestation is believed to have occurred. The temple is also sanctified by the worship of Rama, Lakshmana, Sita, Sage Gowmiyar (Gautama Maharishi), and Arjuna.

Temple Architecture
Towers

TThis east-facing temple is entered through a five-tiered Rajagopuram, notable for its simple and unadorned appearance, as it is devoid of sculptural ornamentation. The base of the gateway is constructed from durable black granite, while its upper tiers are built of brick in the traditional style. After passing through the Rajagopuram, devotees encounter the Kodimaram (flagstaff), the Balipeetam (sacrificial altar), and the Nandi Mandapam, where the sacred bull Nandi faces the sanctum. Proceeding further, one reaches the elegant three-tiered inner gopuram, which serves as the entrance to the temple's inner precincts and leads devotees closer to the sanctum.

Granary

A remarkable feature of the outer prakaram is the large circular granary situated on the right side. Constructed of brick between 1600 and 1634 CE, this impressive structure rises to a height of approximately 36 feet and is crowned with a domed roof. It stands as a fine example of the temple's well-planned storage facilities and architectural ingenuity. The granary was designed to hold nearly 3,000 kalams of paddy—equivalent to approximately 280–300 metric tons—reflecting the temple's vast agricultural endowments and prosperous economic status during that period. The enormous storage capacity illustrates the significant role the temple once played in managing agricultural produce and supporting religious, charitable, and community activities. Although the granary is no longer in use today, it remains an important historical monument, offering a glimpse into the temple's rich administrative and agrarian heritage.

Goddess sanctum

From the temple entrance, a pathway branching to the left leads devotees to the separate sannidhi of the Goddess. Here, Goddess Dhawalambika is enshrined in a graceful standing posture. The Goddess's sanctum is situated on the right side of the main temple complex, in keeping with the traditional layout of many ancient Shiva temples. Revered as the divine consort of the presiding deity, Goddess Dhawalambika is worshipped by devotees seeking peace, prosperity, and divine grace before proceeding to the main sanctum.

Other Deities

Within the spacious prakaram surrounding the sanctum, one can find the sannidhis of Vinayaka, Somaskanda, Subramanya, the Lingams worshipped by Sage Vasishta, Mahalakshmi, and the royal devotees King Parthiban and King Malayadhvajan. The idols of the 63 Nayanmars are also enshrined here, along with a Nataraja Sabha. Additionally, there are sannidhis for Kala Bhairava and Surya.

Presiding Deity

The sanctum of the main deity faces east. The Goshta Murthas adorning the walls include Vinayaka, Urdhva Thandava, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma, Lingothbhava, Ardhanariswara, and Goddess Durga. There is also a separate sannidhi for Chandikeswarar. Since the Goddess's sanctum is located to the right of the main shrine, this temple is regarded as highly auspicious for marriages. Local devotees often choose this sacred place to perform engagement and wedding ceremonies. The pathikam composed by TiruNavukkarasar for Tiru-Palaithurai is in 5'th tirumurai.
