Temple Description
The Layout

Facing east, the temple features two majestic gopurams, two prakarams and a sacred temple tank situated in front of the complex. The impressive five-tiered rajagopuram is adorned with beautiful sculptures, and upon entering through its gateway, devotees are greeted by the kodimaram (flagstaff) and balipeedam. The outer prakaram houses a marriage hall, the sannidhi of Goddess Oppilla Nayaki in a graceful standing posture with four arms, and a separate sannidhi dedicated to Sage Agastya situated near the sacred Agastiya Theertham, a perennial water body that retains water throughout the year. Passing through the three-tiered second gopuram leads to the inner prakaram, where devotees can worship Somaskandar, Chandrasekharar, Saptha Kanniyar, Dakshinamoorthy, Ayyanar and Valampuri Vinayaka. The temple also contains an independent sannidhi for Muruga with Deivanai, as well as a sannidhi for Varadaraja Perumal accompanied by Ubhaya Nachiyars, reflecting the harmonious presence of both Shaivite and Vaishnavite traditions within the sacred complex.

The sanctum of this temple is renowned for its unique significance. Although the presiding deity appears in the form of a Shiva Lingam, it is believed that both Shiva and Goddess Shakthi reside together within the sanctum. In this divine manifestation, Shiva is said to bestow prominence upon Shakthi by revealing His Ardhanareeswara aspect, while the Goddess remains present in a subtle, formless state known as "Aroopam." Reflecting this union, the sanctum is crowned by two vimanams, an exceptionally rare architectural feature found in only a few temples, with Kasi being another notable example.

Tirupugazh Sthalam

Saint poet Arunagirinathar has extolled the Muruga of Nedungalam in Thiruppugazh, which includes a specific song honoring the deity. In this temple, Muruga is portrayed in a standing posture, facing east, with a single face and two arms, accompanied by his two goddesses.

Sunlight & Theertham Glory

From the 7th to the 12th of the Tamil month of Aadi, sunlight illuminates the self-manifested Linga of the presiding deity each morning. The temple features two water bodies, Agastya Theertham and Sundara Theertham. It is believed that offering 'Panakam', a sweetened drink, to Karuppanna Swamy at the bank of Sundara Theertham can lead to the healing of ailments. A stone mortar belonging to the Chola era, located in the Mahamandap, exemplifies exquisite craftsmanship.

Dakshinamurthy & Sages' Worship

The temple's Dakshinamurthy is uniquely depicted as Yoga Dakshinamurthy, seated in Siddhasana, holding a deer's tail and performing the Chin Mudra. Sage Agastya is also known to have worshipped at this site.

Pathigam Glory

Sambandar's poem dedicated to the temple is held in great reverence, with the saint asserting that reciting this poem can help alleviate dangers and bring happiness.
