Temple Layout - The east-facing temple comes into view with an impressive three-tiered rajagopuram gateway tower, an architectural hallmark of South Indian Hindu temples. As one approaches the temple, the serene "surya theertham" can be seen directly opposite the gopuram. Passing through the ornate gopuram gateway, devotees enter the front mandap (pillared hall), which houses the balipeetam and Nandi, the bull vahana of Lord Shiva. To the right of the main hall is the south-facing sannidhi dedicated to the temple's presiding female deity, Ambujakshi, who is also reverentially referred to as "Kaanaar kuzhali Ammai" and "Kol-Valaikkai Ambikai". Adjacent to Ambujakshi's sannidhi is another sannidhi dedicated to Saneeshwara Bhagavan, the planetorial god for Saturn. This particular sannidhi attracts a large number of devotees who seek blessings and remedies for the astrological affliction known as "Sani dosha." Within the front mandap, visitors will also encounter a captivating sculpture depicting Lord Krishna flanked by two Nagas (serpent deities), as well as a Linga accompanied by Nagas.

Upon passing through the pillared hall and crossing the threshold into the inner sanctum, devotees are greeted by the sight of the small-sized swayambhu linga, representing the presiding deity Pathanjali Eeshwarar. The temple's celestial alignment is such that during the Tamil month of Chithirai, the sun's rays gracefully fall and prostrate themselves upon the deity for three consecutive days. The temple's pantheon of Goshta Murthas includes Vinayaka, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu, Brahma, and Goddess Durga. Opposite Mahavishnu lies the sannidhi dedicated to Muruga, flanked by his two consorts, Valli and Deivanai. Adjacent to this, devotees encounter the sannidhi of Gajalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. Circumambulating the central sanctum, one discovers the prakaram housing sannidhis for Kasi Viswanath, Visalakshi, and Nruthi Vinayaka. Directly opposite the sannidhi of Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, stand the four primary nayanmars, the most revered saints of Tamil Shaivism, accompanied by Vinayaka and the sage Pathanjali himself, creating a powerful spiritual vortex. The temple is particularly renowned for its ability to nullify the negative effects of Naga dosha, a astrological affliction, and devotees flock here to seek solace and liberation from this cosmic burden through heartfelt prayers and offerings.

Temple Legend - Adishesha, the divine serpent upon whom Lord Mahavishnu reclines in the cosmic ocean known as 'Paarkadal', once expressed a fervent desire to witness the spellbinding cosmic dance of Lord Shiva. Moved by Adishesha's deep yearning, Mahavishnu compassionately implored him to take birth on Earth as the sage 'Pathanjali' and to undertake intense penance focused on Lord Shiva. Heeding Mahavishnu's counsel, Adishesha took form as Pathanjali and engaged in deep meditation and austerities. Pleased by Pathanjali's devotion, Lord Shiva chose to reveal his transcendent cosmic dance to the sage at the sacred site of Chidambaram. Sage Patanjali journeyed to Tirukanattumullur, and once again beseeched Lord Shiva for a glimpse of his sublime cosmic dance. Touched by Patanjali's unrelenting devotion, Shiva once more blessed the sage with a vision of his timeless, cosmic dance at this temple, an act that led to the deity enshrined there being reverentially known as Patanjai Eeshwarar.

The pathikam composed by Sundarar is in 7'th Tirumurai.

It is one of the five 'puliyur' temples. The others are Perumpatra Puliyur (Chidambaram), Omam-Puliyur, Erukatham-puliyur, Tirupaadiri-puliyur. Out of these Omam-Puliyur is near to this place.
