Temple Layout The temple is located on a vast expanse of sandy terrain, with its main entrance facing west. Upon entering through the gateway into the outer prakraram, visitors are greeted by a dwajasthambam and a balipeetam. A second gateway then leads to the inner labyrinth of the temple, where the inner prakram houses the sannidhis for various deities including Subramanya, Gajalakshmi, Veerateshwara Lingam, Kannapar, the lingams worshipped by Thribhuvana Chakravarthy and his wife, Bhairavar, Surya (the Sun God), and the Navagrahas (the 9 planetary deities). Further into the temple, more sannidhis can be found, including those for Vianayaka, 63 Nayanmars, and Somaskandar. The sanctum of the presiding deity can be accessed through a mandapam, with the Ambaal Sannidhi facing south to the left. Interestingly, from a specific position in the mandapam, visitors can have darshan of both Chopuranathar and Chopuranayaki simultaneously.
The presiding deity's Lingam was installed and was worshipped by Agasthiya Maharishi and his palm prints can still be seen on the deity. The Lingam is elongated on a square 'aavudayar' facing west. The female deity chopuranayaki appears glorious in a standing posture. Goshta Murtha's of Brahma and Vishnu worshipping Lingodhbhavar are panelled on the wall behind the presiding deity's sanctum. This dharshan of the tri-murthy's is considered special.
The area where the temple is located is called Thiruchopuram and the nearby area is called Thyagavalli. It is said that the place got its name because it was renovated by Thyagavalli, the crown wife of Kulothunga chola I.
According to legend, this temple was once completely covered by sand dunes. Later, a devotee of Lord Shiva came to know about this place but found no temple here. However he coud see the tip of the gopuram kalash which was visible. Thereafter, with the help of the villagers nearby, this temple was recovered from the sand dunes.
The pathikam for this place composed by Thirugnana Sambandar is in the first thirumurai.
